Chivs86 Poetry - Riddle of the Sphinx

Updated on April 21, 2014

Chivs86 Poetry - The Riddle Of The Sphinx

What walks on all fours,
two then three?
(What) is -
more concerned about the food that it eats
than the animal that it used to be?
The paper it's printed on but not the trees...
that were cut down
resulting in destructed habitat
the homes of these inhabitants
which they might never match.
What has -
not the kindness or consideration
for creatures other than its own,
or nature?
*************
Only when it’s for the entertainment -
...of others
...What will act like then
for its brothers...
like it wants to save the rain forests,
the oceans pollution,
the airs radiation?

What would do such a cruel
thing...
for its greed, and the power trip?

What walks on two legs
and is an ape?

(Answer)

- The ape that keeps the other apes in a cage -
-The ape that is born learns to crawl -
- and after a couple of months starts to walk -
- grows up - goes to war,

...and learns to care
for nothing else here it all
except itself
and if it lives long enough...
for his limp it might have its own walking stick.

(epilogue)

That’s the riddle of the sphinx.
Man!
Treating its own planet how it has!

Comments:

In Greek Mythology ‘the riddle of the sphinx’ is a story about a half lion half man beast that used to guard the entrance to the city of Thebes. The only people who could pass with their lives being spared were those able to answer its riddle. The riddle being this;
"Which creature has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?"
The answer being;
Man—who crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then uses a walking stick in old age.

About my concept for this poem though. My idea was for this piece of writing to kind of put my own spin on, and to elongate this riddle describing mankind’s destruction as a focal point. I wouldn’t describe it as a riddle in itself as at the end I do give away the answer but more a piece of poetry with elements of the riddle structure.
